Notre Dame honors contract, will play at Arizona State in 2014

Notre Dame will play Arizona State in 2014 after all.

The Irish will honor a contract signed in 2008 to play the Sun Devils next season at ASU, Arizona State announced Tuesday night. Notre Dame previously had told ASU in April that it didn't intend to play the 2014 game citing schedule changes involved with entering a scheduling agreement with the ACC.

In the end, Notre Dame could not get out of the game because there was no buyout, according to a source. The contract stated the game could be cancelled only because of "an act of God, a national crisis, or other events beyond the control of the host institution," according to the Arizona Republic.

Under a separate agreement, Notre Dame and Arizona State will play Oct. 5 this year at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The schools agreed to drop a 2017 game at South Bend.

"We're pleased that Notre Dame was able to resolve its scheduling issues in a way that allows it to play at Sun Devil Stadium in 2014," ASU AD Steve Patterson said. "The game will now be played on Nov. 8, 2014. Our entire Sun Devil family -- season ticket holders, fans, students, alumni -- and our entire community here in the Valley have been looking forward to playing Notre Dame in Tempe since the original agreement was signed in 2008.

"While the game at Notre Dame in 2017 has been canceled, what is most important to us is that the game in Tempe has been saved."
