Say goodbye to the crystal football; BCS symbol will not be retained

DALLAS -- Say goodbye to the crystal football.

College Football Playoff officials will not retain the iconic crystal trophy to present to the national champion beginning next season, CFP executive director Bill Hancock told

“We're going to have a new trophy,” Hancock said.

The football -- currently sponsored by Dr Pepper -- had become a symbol of the BCS, which is part of the reason it won't be used, according to sources. CFP officials and commissioners wanted to get away from a connection with the BCS. Also, there was a feeling that the CFP would have been presenting someone else's trophy. The crystal football is presented by the American Football Coaches Association.

There will be an entirely new trophy beginning in 2014, Hancock said.

The $30,000 trophy -- which has been sponsored by various companies -- has been presented every year since 1986.

Anyone in need of a credential from all the BCS title games? Dennis Dodd has them. In three decades in the business, he's covered everything from the Olympics to Stanley Cup to conference realignment. Just get him on campus in a press box in the fall. His heart lies with college football.
