Pac-12, Big 12 in talks with ESPN to play in Mexico City

LAS VEGAS -- ESPN has had discussions with the Big 12 and Pac-12 about possibly playing a football game in Mexico City.

ESPN president John Skipper mentioned the subject briefly Thursday while speaking at the Football Bowl Association annual meeting.

No dates or teams were mentioned. Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott confirmed the talks later on Thursday.

"Keep your eye on it," Skipper said.

Texas AD Steve Patterson told the Austin American-Statesman in January he was interested in more neutral-site football venues, specifically Mexico City. Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby indicated the game would likely be betweeen Texas and as yet undetermined Pac-12 opponent.

Texas has non-conference games scheduled with Pac-12 teams through 2018. The Horns play UCLA this year at AT&T Stadium. It has a two-game series with Cal in 2015-16 and with USC in 2017-18. The problem is that someone would likely have to give up a home game unless a an arranged match-to-be-determined looms in the future.

Scott is in the middle of expanding his conference's brand into the Far East. Washington and Texas will play a men's basketball game in China on Nov. 14, 2015.

Scott told the move is part of the league's globalization strategy.

"We have been focused on China and Asia," Scott said. "Next frontier is Latin America."
