Four head coaches triggered bonuses of at least $100,000 specifically for making their BCS bowl this year.
Three of those coaches will collect.
Dave Doeren, who took the NC State job shortly after winning the MAC title and one day before the Northern Illinois Huskies landed an Orange Bowl berth, forfeited his $100,000 BCS bonus because he's not coaching the game, according to NIU spokesman Donna Turner.
NC State is increasing Doeren's salary from $420,000 in 2012 to $1.8 million in 2013, but Doeren won't get a bonus for leading NIU to an 12-1 record and spearheading the MAC's first appearance in the BCS.
NC State also paid Doeren's $750,000 buyout.
A message was left with The Legacy Agency, which represents Doeren. So far, no response.
New NIU head coach Rod Carey, promoted from offensive coordinator, is coaching the Huskies in the Orange Bowl against Florida State.
Similar to Doeren's situation, Wisconsin's Bret Bielema was due a $50,000 bonus for Wisconsin's Rose Bowl berth but will not coach the game after taking the Arkansas job. I've put in requests with Wisconsin and Bielema's agent to see if he still collects this money.
Bielema earned $50,000 for winning the Big Ten championship game.
Alabama's Nick Saban is set to make up to $400,000 in bonuses if the Tide wins the national title against Notre Dame, but he's guaranteed a $200,000 bonus for making the championship game.
Louisville sweetens the postseason pot for Charlie Strong, who earns $191,667 (1/12th of his $2.3-million salary) for making a bowl game along with $100,000 for a BCS berth.
Florida's Will Muschamp gets $100,000 for his Sugar Bowl bid.
Other BCS coaching bonuses -- $50,000 for Oregon's Chip Kelly, $40,000 for Kansas State's Bill Snyder, $20,000 for FSU's Jimbo Fisher. Contracts for Notre Dame's Brian Kelly and Stanford's David Shaw are not public.
Depending on how the contract is structured, coaches can make more from their team's AP ranking than from BCS bowl appearances. Fisher, for example, can make up to $100,000 for a top-five national finish.
