Details of San Diego State's contract with Mountain West

San Diego State rejoins the Mountain West under the stipulation the conference creates national and local television opportunities for all its members “in good faith," according to the agreement signed by the school and the conference Jan. 16.

The two-page “Term Sheet,” obtained through a public records request with the school, is a page shorter than the deal Boise State cut on New Year's Eve, in large part because corralling Boise required new bonus television and playoff revenue structures that reward the best teams.

Yes, this favors Boise, easily the best football program in the Mountain West.

But the Mountain West is looking to spread the television wealth, too, the contract indicates, and it also gave SDSU its full allotment of 2012-13 conference revenue --estimated at $2.5 million -- to pay for its $1.5 million Big East exit fee.

Boise owed $3 million, which the Mountain West covered in 2012-13 revenue allotment and a separate general MWC fund.

Television: SDSU relinquishes its exclusive television broadcast rights to the league, which in the next six months must determine the parameters for the games not selected by CBS Sports Network.

“MWC shall endeavor in good faith, while working with CBSSN and the National Television Partners, to ensure that SDSU, along with all the MWC member institutions, has the opportunity for football and men's basketball games to be selected by the National Television Partners and to participate in the National Exposure Bonus System as articulated in the Boise State University term sheet dated 12/31/12,” according to the term sheet.

Per the Boise contract, the bonus system pays at least $300,000 for appearing on national broadcasts (networks in more than 90 million homes).

The league will work in "good faith" to provide schools with leftover content for regional syndication or for Mountain West digital distribution.

Exit fees: As expected, San Diego State is getting its full 2012-13 revenue share from the Mountain West to pay its Big West fees and any other liquidated damages. SDSU escaped Big East exit fees after Boise left because the schools agreed to join the league as a pair.

The term sheet calls the full revenue distribution a “good faith contribution” for the Aztecs.

“MWC and SDSU recognize the value SDSU brings to the Conference in the form of enabling a Conference Championship game with associated increased revenue to the conference and the value that SDSU brings to the National Television Package,” the term sheet states.

Expansion?: The Mountain West will have “twelve or more football members” at the time of the term sheet signing. Obviously the league still has 12, but it kept that window open just in case.

Men's basketball tournament: Within six months of the term sheet signing, the MWC board will decide whether the MWC men's basketball tournament championship game participants get a larger share of tournament revenue if the game is on a national broadcast (90 million or more homes)

Prior scheduling commitments: The Mountain West honors SDSU's existing non-conference scheduling commitments (men's basketball vs. Kansas on Jan. 4, 2014, for example).

*Other revenue matters: San Diego State receives 2013 NCAA Tournament stipends, expenditure reimbursements for the 2012 Poinsettia Bowl and its portion of all NCAA men's basketball revenue distribution in accordance with the league's sharing formula.
