East Carolina has a contract extension in the works for head coach Ruffin McNeill that should be finalized after the hiring of a new athletic director, according to a source.
Athletics director Terry Holland is retiring and moving into an athletics emeritus role once the school hires its new AD.
McNeill is coming off an 8-5 season and a New Orleans Bowl appearance, losing 43-34 to Louisiana-Lafayette. McNeill is 19-19 in three ECU seasons with two bowl appearances.
East Carolina becomes a football-only Big East Conference member in 2014, with the expectation that the conference will elevate the Pirates to an all-sports member eventually.
Extensions for coaches moving into bigger conferences is common. While at Temple, Steve Addazio received an additional year on his contract for the Owls' move to the Big East. Memphis, also joining the Big East, did the same with coach Justin Fuentes.
McNeill's current contract runs for two more years.
