Cox, Bumphis to cooperate with Miss St. probe; Alabama lawyers up

Fletcher Cox and Chad Bumphis -- two former Mississippi State football stars alleged by Yahoo! Sports to have accepted a purchased flight from a third party during their eligibility -- will cooperate with the Bulldogs' internal investigation on the matter, according to two sources.

Mississippi State found out about the allegation Wednesday when Yahoo!'s investigative team dropped a story that links players from three SEC teams to improper benefits while in school. Former Alabama offensive lineman D.J. Fluker was the subject of a detailed probe involving several benefits provided from former Alabama player Luther Davis, who was working for agents vying to represent Fluker in the NFL. Former Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray and defensive end Maurice Couch also were subjects of the report.

Alabama is consulting with the Birmingham-based firm Starnes Davis Florie on the Fluker case, according to two sources. The firm has worked with Alabama athletics in the past.

Yahoo! authenticated airfare purchases tied to Cox and Bumphis, who are both in the NFL. A receipt showed Davis paid for airfare from Birmingham, Ala., to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for travel on Jan. 3-6, 2012.
