Minneapolis all in for 2017 College Football Playoff bid

Minneapolis will submit a bid for the 2017 College Football Championship Game and is ready to put significant money behind that commitment, Vikings vice president of stadium development Lester Bagley told CBSSports.com.

The Vikings, who will open Vikings Stadium in 2016 with help from the state, would expect a $90 million economic impact from a title game and will invest $10 million or more “to get that type of return,” Bagley said.

“It's a community effort. The Vikings are throwing in,” Bagley said.

The Vikings, Twins, University of Minnesota, Timberwolves and Minneapolis' convention/visitors association will spearhead the push for the Jan. 9, 2017 game.

The deadline for bid submission to the College Football Playoff is Friday.

Several sites will bid on the 2016 and 2017 title games, ESPN reported this week, including Glendale, Ariz., Glendale, Ariz., Jacksonville, New Orleans and Tampa for 2016 and Jacksonville, Miami (Orange), San Antonio, San Francisco and Tampa for 2017 with Minneapolis among cities considering a bid.

Minnesota will face the inevitable weather concerns, but I get the sense the College Football Playoff folks will be open-minded about the process. Dallas for the 2015 title game was destined from the start. The open market truly begins in 2016.

Despite ongoing negotiations over how to pay for Vikings Stadium, a one-year-old facility by 2017 could appeal to the CFP folks.
