Wake Forest has targeted Ball State's Pete Lembo as a potential candidate to replace Jim Grobe, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation.
The Muncie Star Press reports Wake AD Ron Wellman is in Muncie, Ind., today, presumably to talk with Lembo. The source said Lembo was expected to speak with Wake but did not give a timeframe.
Grobe retired after 13 seasons.
Lembo has been a successful head coach at three spots in 13 years, compiling a 104-48 career record at Lehigh, Elon and Ball State, which is 10-2 this season and nearly knocked off BCS contender NIU.
Wake is a private school and could be looking for a coach with experience in that area. Elon, where Lembo coached from 2006-10, is a private liberal arts school about an hour outside of Winston-Salem.
Bowling Green's Dave Clawson also could be in the mix after this week's MAC championship game.
