Bryan Harsin has been hired as the next head coach at Boise State, a source told CBSSports.com.

The 37-year-old Harsin, who will leave Arkansas State to return to his alma mater, succeeds Chris Petersen who left Boise for Washington last week. Harsin compiled a 7-5 record in his one season at Arkansas State, and led the Red Wolves to a berth in the GoDaddy Bowl.

Harsin, 37, played quarterback for the Broncos from 1995 to 1999, and was an assistant on the BSU staff from 2001 to 2010, prior to a stint as the Texas offensive coordinator.

The next coach at ASU could become the team's fifth head coach since Steve Roberts resigned on Nov. 29, 2010. Hugh Freeze (Ole Miss), Gus Malzahn (Auburn) and now Harsin all spent just one year at Arkansas State before moving on to greener pastures. After Malzahn's departure, defensive coordinator John Thompson led the Red Wolves to a win in the 2012 GoDaddy Bowl.
