1. The best job on the market might not be a head coaching job. It might be Florida's OC job.
Unless Texas sends ripples through the system, what's on the open market are Arkansas State, FAU, Bowling Green. More jobs could emerge, but Florida will probably pay more for an offensive coordinator than those jobs will for a head coach.
The uncertainty of Will Muschamp's tenure is a factor. Perhaps the new OC gets a high-paying, high-buyout contract to ease concerns. Florida is desperate for offensive help more so than other high-profile OC jobs such as Notre Dame, where Brian Kelly has heavy playcalling influence.
It seems likely Wil Muschamp will turn to an offense with more tempo than with the power game under Brent Pease.
Florida has not made any formal contact with Arizona State OC Mike Norvell, but I'm told feelers have been put out to the Sun Devils playcaller.
The Sun Devils were second in the Pac-12 in total offensive plays (1,024, or 78.8 per game) and scoring offense (41.0 ppg).
ASU is prepared to take care of Norvell, so he could be difficult to pry away from Tempe.
Thinking the Gators will wait until after this week's recruiting cycle before pursuing candidates.
2. Arkansas State -- which should embrace the revolving door of coaches -- is an attractive job because of the constant turnover.
Get an up-and-comer, watch him go, win 7-to-9 games, rinse, repeat.
Counting interims, the Red Wolves are about to be on their fifth coach in three years. But considering Gus Malzahn (Auburn) and Bryan Harsin (Boise) won a combined 16 games the past two years, Arky State might have a formula that works.
3. Cincinnati offensive coordinator Eddie Gran, Ole Miss DC Dan Werner and Arkansas State DC John Thompson are names to consider for Arkansas State, per @BFeldmanCBS.
Gran wants to be a head coach and has a strong recruiting base in the south.
Auburn OC Rhett Lashlee would be a home run but he might wait for something bigger.
Don't be surprised if Arkansas DC Chris Ash gets involved in this job or perhaps at Bowling Green.
One coach that would want the Arkansas State job and could be a wild card: Long-time NFL assistant Maurice Carthon, who's in the ASU Ring of Honor.
4. As of late Wednesday afternoon, FAU hadn't made a final decision on the Owls' new head coach.
There's been a lot of buzz around Ohio State RBs coach Stan Drayton, another good recruiter, but I haven't gotten confirmation on that.
5. Considering the circumstances, UConn did pretty well with the Bob Diaco hire.
Michigan State DC Pat Narduzzi was the natural fit but he didn't want the job. Neither did Fresno State's Tim DeRuyter. But Diaco's a proven defensive mind at a high level and, according to Twitter, killed the press conference.
Ball State's Pete Lembo would have been a heady hire but overall it's hard to complain with Diaco. AD Warde Manuel gets a B+.
