Coaching Changes Daily: Potential hires at Miami, Louisville, Vanderbilt

How about Charlie Strong at Miami? (USATSI)
It would be a long shot, but how about Charlie Strong at Miami? (USATSI)

The coaching searches for Texas and Penn State are taking fascinating turns this week. Big names are involved, and they are in or out, depending on the hour.

At Texas, Jim Mora and Art Briles are out as fast as Charlie Strong and James Franklin are in.

At PSU, Franklin's up against Miami's Al Golden, who's reportedly been offered the Penn State job, though the Harrisburg Patriot-News just shot that down by saying no one has received an offer.

Making an offer to Golden would be a fairly easy decision for Penn State - it's all about whether he wants to jump into the sanction pool that he just got out of at Miami.

I'm not so convinced Franklin would leave Vandy, a place where he makes $3-plus-million per year with more likely coming, has ultimate job security and program improvements. Vandy just built a $31-million indoor facility and has discussed upgrades to the McGugin Center, the team's football wing. Franklin is tight with AD David Williams and the two have discussed the future on numerous occasions this offseason.

Not saying Texas or Penn State won't entice him -- Texas would be really hard to pass up -- but he has a good situation where he is, too.

Let's break down a few options for schools that might or might not be looking for a football coach in the next week or so.

* If Miami loses Golden, potential replacements that come to mind: Greg Schiano, Charlie Strong, Kliff Kingsbury, Mario Cristobal, Doc Holliday.

Yes, that Charlie Strong. He'd be a long shot at best, but Strong would clean up in Miami recruiting. Sweep, sweep. Schiano is a former Canes defensive coordinator whose understated job at Rutgers is easy to overlook after what happened at Tampa. In Miami, Kingsbury would be doing Gucci ads in no time.Cristobal would be sort of a plan b but is an energetic South Florida guy who showed major potential at FIU before surprisingly fired. Holliday is a good Florida recruiter and worked magic at Marshall this year.

*If Louisville loses Strong, potential replacements that come to mind: Chad Morris, Jim McElwain, Matt Wells, Shawn Watson

No, Bobby Petrino isn't coming back. Morris' offense would thrive in Louisville. McElwain and Wells are former Louisville assistants that built consistent Mountain West winners this season. Wells was UL's passing game coordinator in 2009 and nearly won the MWC with serious injury issues. Watson might get an interview.

*If Vandy loses Franklin, potential replacements that come to mind: Pete Lembo, Kirby Smart, Ivan Jasper, Derek Mason.

Lembo knows how to run a progam and win. Smart is due for an SEC shot. Jasper was mentioned prominently for the job when Franklin was hired in 2010. Mason is one of the country's most unheralded great coordinators.
