Liberty among 4-6 schools vying for 12th Sun Belt spot

The Sun Belt Conference is looking to add a 12th member by June 1 and has received interest from 4-6 FCS-level schools, commissioner Karl Benson says.

Liberty University, an evangelical school that went 8-4 as a member of the Big South last year, has been "on our radar screen and will continue to be on our radar," said Benson, who added no agreement is imminent.

Coastal Carolina is not among those 4-6 schools.

After losing several schools to C-USA, including Western Kentucky in March, the Sun Belt added Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, Idaho and New Mexico State for 2014, giving the conference 11 members for now.

A 12-team league facilitate a conference championship game, but that's not all.

"It's to be able to create the geographic divisions," Benson said. "Right now, it's pretty obvious the Sun Belt is void a team in the eastern division."

Despite the defections, the Sun Belt performed admirably last season with seven of eight teams gaining bowl eligibility. The two that got a bowl call-up, Louisiana-Lafayette and Arkansas State, both won their games.
