Texas quarterback David Ash now has two years of eligibility remaining after the NCAA approved his petition for a medical redshirt for 2013, a source told CBSSports.com on Friday.

A University of Texas spokesman confirmed the news.

Ash seemed poised for a solid 2013 performance but missed 10 games last season due to concussions. The NCAA's approval was an expected move.

Ash is reportedly out for the rest of spring ball after fracturing his foot but he should return for the fall.

Ash's eligibility deepens the intrigue for Texas' quarterback battle, which likely will include USC transfer Max Wittek, who also has two years remaining and can play right away once he finishes undergrad work.

Mater Dei High School coach Bruce Rollinson, who coached Wittek, said Friday his former quarterback told him recently he's "leaning toward" transferring to Texas but hadn't finalized his decision. Wittek on Friday talked to colleague Bruce Feldman about his process.

Both quarterbacks are talented but come with risks, and not just for Texas -- potentially for Ash's long-term health. Clearly Wittek wouldn't move to Austin without feeling pretty good about winning the job. Perhaps Ash can change that.

Rising sophomore Tyrone Swoopes is an impressive athlete with natural ability but doesn't appear to have an inside track on the job.

With Texas' past misses at quarterbacks (Manziel or Winston, anyone?), Charlie Strong could use some stable play under center in his first year.
