College's version of free agency has affected several power-conference schools in the last few months: Alabama, N.C. State, Virginia Tech, TCU, Boston College and, had Max Wittek graduated from USC last month, Texas.
Wittek was a realistic starter for the 2014 Longhorns but now must sit out a season before playing. He remains undecided on his future, at least publicly.
Quarterback transfers are nothing new: Last year's group of standouts included LSU's Zach Mettenberger (from Georgia), Pitt's Tom Savage (from Arizona), SMU's Garrett Gilbert (from Texas) and Vanderbilt's Austyn Carta-Samuels (from Wyoming).
But more than ever quarterbacks are prepared to accelerate their undergraduate degrees in order to play right away. Only undergrads must sit out a season per NCAA rules.
Most transfers from this year's list can play right away for quarterback-starved teams.
Why wait behind a stud when you can play now? That's been the approach of former Florida State quarterbacks Clint Trickett (West Virginia) in 2013 and Jacob Coker (Alabama) for 2014.
Provided is an attempt at a master transfer list for the 2014 offseason, broken down into four categories: Transfer quarterbacks eligible to play right away, eligible to play after sitting out a year, eligible for 2015 and still on the market. We could be missing a few but this is definitely most of them.
This list is specific to FBS. Eastern Illinois' Jalen Whitlow (from Kentucky) and McNeese State's Daniel Sams (from Kansas State) don't count. Also excluded is Trickett, since he started for the Mountaineers last season. Only first-year transfer starters count here.
Another name not included is Jake Heaps, Kansas (KU hasn't officially confirmed Heaps' reported transfer, but Charlie Weis doesn't sound optimistic.)
