Texas Tech lifts scholarship ban for OU's Baker Mayfield

The curious case of Baker Mayfield's transfer continues.

Texas Tech still supports the transfer rule that forces former Red Raiders quarterback Baker Mayfield to sit the season, but the school is now permitting Oklahoma, his new school, to put Mayfield on scholarship, Tech spokesman Blayne Beal told CBSSports.com on Thursday.

Mayfield, who was the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year after throwing for 2,315 yards and 12 touchdowns, reportedly left Tech because he wanted a scholarship. His walk-on status was also the reason Bob Stoops said Mayfield shouldn't be held to the same standards as scholarship transfers required by NCAA rules to sit out a season. Tech told Mayfield he had a scholarship waiting for him in the spring if he stuck around.

El Paso-based lawyer Jim Darnell, who's representing Mayfield through his NCAA waiver process, said Thursday he hopes Tech "does the right thing" and lifts the transfer stance. Mayfield would already be eligible if Tech loosened its stance, said Darnell, who adds Tech repeatedly denied Mayfield's request to be put on OU scholarship before July 1.

That's great that Mayfield can at lease get his tuition paid for, right? Well, not according to the Oklahoman, OU doesn't have a scholarship available because "Tech waited too long to stop blocking it." Mayfield decided to transfer in early December and committed to Oklahoma afterward.

Coaches generally don't like when top players transfer within the conference, especially leaving the team before the season, which had been rumored with Mayfield. If Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury wasn't going to budge, lifting the scholarship ban seemed like a natural choice. Apparently it's too late for that.

Mayfield would likely be No. 2 on Oklahoma's quarterback depth chart, behind Trevor Knight, should he be cleared to play.
