The two-time defending champs went down in dramatic fashion at Auburn (which has a definite flair for the dramatic). That leaves just two major undefeated teams, Florida State , which put the perfect capper on a miserable season for Florida , and Ohio State, who escaped in Ann Arbor against Michigan.
Those two now project to the BCS title game in this week's bowl projections, which would thrill the Orange Bowl. That game would get Clemson to replace Florida State and match them up with Alabama, who will certainly be an at-large pick, and may even automatically qualify as one.
The Sugar Bowl has not had the SEC champion in its game since Georgia in 2005, but that figures to change this year. The SEC title game is a battle of Tigers, Auburn and Missouri. Auburn is projected to play American conference champion UCF.
Michigan State would finally get back to the Rose Bowl as a replacement for Ohio State. The Spartans haven't been to Pasadena since 1987. They would play the winner of the Pac-12 championship game, projected to be Stanford.
The Fiesta Bowl is projected to get non-AQ qualifier Northern Illinois to face Big 12 projected champ Oklahoma State. If the Cowboys lose to Oklahoma next week, the Big 12 champion will be the winner of the Baylor-Texas game.
