Senate committee postpones college sports hearing

A U.S. Senate committee has postponed a hearing on college sports that had been scheduled for Wednesday.

No reason for the postponement was given in a news release, which said the hearing will be rescheduled for a date following the Memorial Day recess for Congress. A call to a spokesman for the committee seeking comment was not immediately returned.

The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation last week announced a hearing titled “Promoting the Well-Being and Academic Success of College Athletes.” The committee, chaired by Sen. Jay Rockefeller IV (D-West Virginia), had said it would examine whether the commercial operation of college athletics unfairly exploits college athletes, including issues related to their education.

Former UCLA basketball player Ed O'Bannon and current NFL player Arian Foster were expected to testify. NCAA President Mark Emmert had an invitation to attend.

Mary Willingham, the North Carolina reading specialist who questioned the literacy level of athletes being admitted to the university, was initially told she would testify in the hearing. Willingham was later told she would not be a witness.
