Dolphins need to just play Ryan Tannehill

I feel bad for David Garrard. I mean it.

Yes, I blistered him when he was the starting quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars, mostly because I think he should be nothing more than a backup.

But he was having a good camp for the Miami Dolphins, and had a chance to start after sitting out last season with a back injury. Now comes word he has a knee problem that will require surgery.

That's bad for Garrard.

But it's good for Miami in the long run. Let's be real here: The Dolphins aren't a playoff team, no matter how much bravado Chad Johnson gives off.

That's why it's smart for the Dolphins to start rookie first-round pick Ryan Tennehill. Just get on with it.

If Miami were to start Garrard or Matt Moore, all it does is delay the inevitable, which is handing this team to Tannehill.

You don't draft a guy in the first round without thinking he will be the franchise passer.

If Garrard or Moore were to play, Tannehill is just set back another year. Instead he should be learning on the job, not holding a clipboard.

Game experience means everything to a quarterback, even if it isn't good. Ask any of them who have played as rookies. Bad games playing are better than good games watching.

So Garrard's injury is bad for him, but it might just be the thing that wises up the Miami staff to doing what they need to do, which is start Tannehill.
