Memo to NBA bottom feeders: Tank your season, now!

But look at some of the other guys from that 2006 high school class, players who were widely believed to be one-and-done candidates at the college level:

Derrick Caracter (horrible attitude). Hasheem Thabeet (horrible skills). Paul Harris (horrible freshman season). UNC freshmen Tywon Lawson and Wayne Ellington and Georgia Tech freshman Thaddeus Young were good but they aren't close to NBA-ready. Lawson can't shoot. Ellington can't do anything but shoot. Young isn't ready to play on an NBA wing.

Kansas freshman Darrell Arthur? Easy on the eyes, but he'll sit his ass on an NBA bench. Georgetown's Vernon Macklin and Connecticut's Stanley Robinson flat-out sucked. (My contact information is listed above.) So did Ohio State's Daequan Cook once the Buckeyes entered Big Ten play.

Stanford freshman Brook Lopez might be the third-best NBA prospect after Oden and Durant, but he announced his return to school. Kansas sophomore Julian Wright also has said he won't enter the draft, but it shows the shallowness of this draft pool that NBA teams are disappointed in his decision. The guy is a great passer and athlete with a tremendous feel for the game, but he cannot shoot. Simply can't do it. And is too skinny by about 25 pounds. That was your possible No. 3 pick in this year's draft. (And might still be ... NBA people tell me Wright is waffling.)

Alabama junior Ronald Steele was thought to be the top point guard prospect for the 2007 Draft, but he played all season on knees -- plural -- that required surgery. Duke sophomore Josh McRoberts continued his freefall by showing zero killer instinct. While it's impressive that a 6-foot-11 guy can dribble up the court against pressure, the NBA has plenty of guys who can handle the ball. The NBA wants guys who can attack the rim. McRoberts would just as soon watch someone else do that.

So who does that leave, after Oden and Durant, in this 2007 draft? Assuming these guys enter the draft, it leaves Brandan Wright and any of the following three players from Florida: power forwards Al Horford and Joakim Noah, and shooting guard Corey Brewer. Brewer and Horford are better prospects, but all three have holes. Brewer doesn't handle well enough, and shoots well only in spurts. Horford can't shoot beyond point-blank range. Noah can't shoot at all.

Crazy as this sounds, the best option for the No. 3 pick in this draft might be Ohio State freshman Mike Conley Jr., who needs more strength and shooting range but is ready in the T.J. Ford sense to run a team right now.

Conley would be a nice addition, but he's not going to change a franchise overnight. Neither will Wright, Horford or anyone in the 2007 draft -- anyone but Oden and Durant.

Tank it now, hopeless NBA dregs. Tank it like your future depends on it.

Because it does.
