Gregg Doyel

To paraphrase the song, 'I was wrooooong, West Virginia'

By | CBSSports.com National Columnist

When you're wrong, you say so. Or you could do what I normally do and say nothing -- hoping that with enough time, your wrong will somehow become right.

That's what I did last year with Vince Young, who I ripped as a waste of the No. 3 overall draft pick, and then watched in mortification as he uncorked a rookie season that ended with a spot in the Pro Bowl. For months, Vince Young fans have begged me to admit my mistake. But I waited, and sure enough he's been lousy this season.

Yes, yes you will. (AP)

So the Vince Young retraction can wait.

The West Virginia retraction cannot.

Holy crap was I wrong. Or whatever word means "worse than wrong." Wrong would be a major upgrade from what I wrote 2½ weeks ago when I dismissed West Virginia's national championship hopes in a story about its 38-31 victory against Louisville. I believe the key words in that story were "West Virginia" and "2007 national championship" and "never."

In my defense ...

OK, there is no defense. Never means never, not Jan. 7, which is the day West Virginia will play for the national championship. Regardless of how it happened, it did happen. Stupid freaking Ohio State and LSU and Oregon and Oklahoma ...

Actually, I take that back. I'm not mad at Ohio State, LSU, Oregon or Oklahoma. I'm happy they fell. They don't deserve to play for the national championship.

Ohio State choked at home against Illinois. When Jim Tressel dies a long time from now after a long and happy life with many children, I want it on his epitaph that he was once outcoached by Ron Zook.

LSU forgot how to play defense against Arkansas, which had to be doubly disturbing for LSU fans considering the most likely candidate to replace Michigan-bound Les Miles is defensive coordinator Bo Pelini.

Oregon lost to Arizona after coach Mike Bellotti put his future ahead of Dennis Dixon's future. The Ducks were done in the first quarter when Dixon lay in a heap over his torn ACL. That's not quite karma, because true karma would have resulted in a torn ACL for Bellotti. But Bellotti got what he deserved, even if Dixon did not.

Oklahoma lost to something called Colorado.

Meanwhile, West Virginia kept winning. The Mountaineers followed that victory against Louisville by winning at No. 21 Cincinnati. Then on Saturday, West Virginia trashed No. 20 Connecticut, 66-21. Cincinnati and Connecticut are good teams, not great teams. You're right about that. But Colorado's not even good. Neither is Arizona. And while Illinois and Arkansas are good, they're also coached by Ron Zook and Houston Nutt. Who are both bad. So there you go.
