Media's blind ambition feeds public's hunger -- and we all get sick

"You never relax," he said. "The day you relax is the day they get you."

We'll get you, all right. Because that's what we do. Well, it's what we do now. We ignored the steroid scandal in the 1990s, allowing it to happen right under our noses as we joked about ballooning ballplayers in the press box -- I was there; I heard it and probably even contributed to it -- but those days are gone. Now we're on the steroid trail like flies on stink, plus we're playing gotcha with a ballplayer's bedroom.

Look, I'm all about a nosy media. If a player is breaking a law, any law, I want to know about it. If he's using steroids or HGH, tell me. If he's scuffing the ball or corking the bat, that's fair game. In other words, if the player is cheating on the system, let's get him.

If he's cheating on his wife? I don't want to know. And even if I do want to know -- and I've been reading about Madonna and A-Rod myself -- it's not my right to know. Which means it's not right for anyone in the media, legitimate or otherwise, to tell me.

A-Rod leaves Madonna's apartment at midnight, and it's breaking news in New York. The source is the doorman.

My God. How much lower can we sink?
