Nation's best team is in SEC, but which one?
Alabama beat the hell out of the best the ACC has to offer, Clemson, and Alabama was thought to be a middle-of-the-road SEC team. But that's one hell of a rough road, with the most dangerous stop being in Gainesville, Fla.
Only a few times in the past 20 years has college football seen a team with as many playmakers as Florida has. One of those times was Southern California in 2005 with Reggie Bush, LenDale White, Matt Leinart, Dwayne Jarrett, Dominique Byrd, etc. Some of the 1990s champions from Miami and Florida State come to mind.
And then there are these Gators, who scored every which way imaginable -- including a 62-yard sprint by freshman (and future Olympic 100-meter contender) Jeffrey Demps -- in a 56-10 wipeout of Hawaii. How good was Florida? Heisman winner Tim Tebow had his least productive game since he was coming off the bench as a freshman, and Heisman candidate Percy Harvin didn't play with a sore heel. And it was 56-0 in the third quarter.
Florida might even be as good as Alabama, Georgia and LSU, which would be saying something. If those were the top four teams in this week's Top 25, I wouldn't complain. But I would wonder where are Auburn and South Carolina, who won by identical 34-0 scores in their openers.
And what about Tennessee, which plays UCLA on Monday night? No telling how good the Volunteers are going to be this season.
Even at the end of the season, there'll be no telling how good some of these SEC teams are. They're going to beat up on each other -- and by December there will be a three-loss SEC team that could win the Big Ten, a four-loss SEC team that could win the Big East, and a five-loss SEC team that could win the ACC.
And if there is a God in heaven, new Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino will have the best 3-9 team in college football history.
