Reporters doing what they have to -- and so is judge

In that scenario, the same legal system that sent Lance Williams and Mark Fainaru-Wada to jail -- the system that has journalists everywhere in an outrage -- is a good system. No, it's a great system.

But journalists everywhere are outraged. Fine. There's one here at CBS SportsLine.com, a great guy who sent a staff-wide email asking me and others to: "Please consider it your professional duty to support our comrades at the San Francisco Chronicle sentenced to 18 months in jail on Thursday. Please write the sentencing judge in the case."

Affixed was Judge White's office address. I'm not going to write Judge White a personal letter, so maybe this will suffice:

Judge White,

I hate it that you ordered Lance Williams and Mark Fainaru-Wade to jail. But I understand why you did it. The reporters were doing their job. So were you.

Sincerely,
Gregg Doyel
