Laugh track cued: B-A-D-dour has another hire to whiff on at UNC
One year later, Navy hired Johnson. In the two years before Johnson, Navy was 1-20. Two years later Navy was 10-2. Overall Johnson is 33-24, and his 2006 Navy team -- which cannot give scholarships and is recruiting players during a war -- would beat the snot out of North Carolina. Paul Johnson is a good ol' boy and a great ol' football coach.
Dick Baddour? He's a mediocre high school student trying to pass physics at MIT.
He has no chance to ace this hire, which is why UNC fans ought to be terrified as he wanders the countryside. Baddour has enlisted former Big 8 commissioner Chuck Neinas, a wise and connected man, but Baddour strikes me as another Rick Greenspan, the Indiana AD who hired a search firm this spring and ignored its input as he picked Kelvin Sampson.
North Carolina's next coach is available right now, but Baddour will mess it up. Former University of Miami coach Butch Davis wants back in after spending 2001-04 with the Cleveland Browns.
Davis, who went 51-20 at Miami and restored the program's reputation on and off the field, is the big fish in the coaching market. Baddour needs to get him in the boat now, before other schools -- like Miami -- can drop their lines in the water. Butch Davis is the perfect catch.
Dick Baddour? He's standing in the boat, looking over the wrong side, trying not to fall in.
