Trout has a torn ligament in his left thumb and may require surgery, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports Monday.

The injury will send Trout to the disabled list for the first time in his career, and the Angels called up Eric Young Jr. to start in the outfield Monday night -- the first sign that Trout's injury would be major enough to keep him out for a significant period of time. Trout would likely require 5-to-8 weeks to recover from surgery, but he will miss at least a couple weeks regardless. Expect a decision on the surgery to be made within the next couple of days.
