Smith fired three scoreless innings in Thursday's 12-9 loss to the Astros, giving up two hits and racking up four strikeouts.

After the Astros decimated starter Jesse Hahn, Smith provided some valuable long relief by shutting them down over three frames. The 29-year-old right-hander continues to be hard to trust, however, as he'd also given up at least one earned run in four of his previous five outings. The inconsistency has kept both his ERA (5.87) and WHIP (1.52) at less-than-ideal levels, but his ability to step into scenarios like Thursday's are helping him hold on to a bullpen role for now.
