Matt Kemp on his way back to elite status in Fantasy Baseball?
Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp struggled through the first two months of the season, but he's been very good in June and the question now beckons if he's on track to regain his elite Fantasy status?
We had an interesting conversation on the Fantasy Baseball podcast Thursday morning. During the buy-or-sell segment, we were asked if Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp could "hit this consistently for the rest of the year?" With little hesitation, I said yes.
I had been down on Kemp in recent weeks, even moving him outside the top 40 outfielders in the Fantasy Baseball rankings. But Thursday I decided to move Kemp back into the top 30, and even said on the podcast I feel Kemp could get back to his elite status.
The big selling point for me is that it appears Kemp's plate discipline is returning. He's walked eight times and has a .509 on-base percentage in his last 13 games. He had all of 14 walks and a .291 on-base percentage in his first 51 games.
Perhaps I didn't give Kemp enough of a pass for being sidelined for most of the spring recovering from offseason ankle surgery. Maybe the first two months he needed to work on his timing since he was unable to this spring.
He's had a lot of pressure recently to perform because of the logjam in the Dodgers' outfield and the potential for him to lose playing time. But even Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said recently Kemp "is better than .250" and "he's not at an age where you say, 'It's not there anymore.'" I definitely agree with Donnie Baseball there.
