Padres pitcher Aaron Northcraft was designated for assignment Wednesday to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for James Shields.
The 24-year-old Northcraft has yet to make his MLB debut. He has spent his entire minor-league career with the Braves prior to being acquired in a trade in December.
