Ramirez was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket on Sunday.
The Red Sox decided to hold off on placing Jackie Bradley (knee) on the disabled list following his MRI on Sunday, so Ramirez will be squeezed out of a 25-man roster spot with the team activating fellow reliever Matt Barnes from the bereavement list in a corresponding move. Ramirez, who tossed 1.2 scoreless innings in his lone appearance with the big club this season, should be at the top of the list for a promotion if the Red Sox require another reliever at any point.
