Waiting for the buy-low moment
Sometimes it makes sense to root against the players whom you sense are headed for an imminent breakout.
On Monday's Fantasy Baseball Today, I noted that I'm targeting Robbie Ross in any league where I can find an owner who is giving too much weight to his most recent start (go to 5:25 in the video above). After his first three outings, Ross had shown that his ability to induce grounders and throw strikes (for the latter, at least in two of his starts) had translated from his work in the bullpen.
Fortunately, I didn't think to act on this until after Ross' fourth start. Sunday's outing against the White Sox didn't go as well, at least on the surface. He allowed seven runs (four earned) on seven hits and no walks in 5 1/3 innings. Though Ross got hit pretty hard in this start, he still displayed sharp control and good swing-and-miss stuff (12 whiffs in 86 pitches). Now I should be able to get Ross at a discount as compared to what he would have cost prior to Sunday.
Sometimes you have to play the waiting game when pursuing players on the trade market. For example, I like what Nate Eovaldi has done even more than what Ross has this season, but he has yet to turn in a real clunker. I'll be rooting for him to have a less-than-stellar start soon so I can avoid a buy-high scenario.
Addendum: No sooner did I write this post than did I receive an offer to get Eovaldi that I couldn't refuse. Scott White offered him to me in our Podcast Listeners H2H categories league for my Emilio Bonifacio, where I'm already pretty well set for steals. So much for discipline and patience.
