Who's batting third for the White Sox? Really?
White Sox manager Robin Ventura made an interesting move opening day by batting Conor Gillaspie third. The move surprised the Fantasy Sports department, and our Michael Hurcomb shares his thoughts about Ventura's lineup decision.
There's no denying Gillaspie had a great spring, slugging .528 with three home runs and five doubles in 18 games. But is he really worthy of batting in the heart of the order for Chicago?
The reason we were all in shock is because the first instinct is Gillaspie shouldn't be batting third. Here is a guy that slugged .420 in the minors and never had more than 67 RBI in a season. It's true he hit 13 home runs for the White Sox last season, but he slugged just .390 in 134 games. Not to forget he only hit .143 (5 for 35) in 10 games batting third last season. Though, he did have seven RBI.
Maybe this is just a one-day trial since Gillaspie is 2 for 3 in his career against Twins starting pitcher Ricky Nolasco. Or manager Robin Ventura saw something from Gillaspie to indicate his spring numbers aren't a fluke, but it's definitely a wait-and-see situation because the baseball tends to carry in Arizona.
The only intriguing part of this decision is to see if Gillaspie thrives hitting in front of Jose Abreu. That could be great lineup protection and could afford Gillaspie the opportunity to see quality pitches. Though, long term you have to think outfielder Avisail Garcia has more potential to bat third for the White Sox.
