Third baseman Brent Morel has elected to become a free agent after clearing waivers, the Pirates announced Tuesday. Morel was recently designated for assignment by the Pirates after hitting .286 with one RBI in seven at-bats this season.
Pirates infielder Brent Morel was designated for assignment by the club on Saturday. The move was made in order to clear room on the roster for the recently-acquired Aramis Ramirez. Morel appeared in three games for the Pirates in 2015, going 2 for 7 with an RBI.
The Pirates placed infielder Jordy Mercer on the 15-day disabled list, with a lower leg contusion and MCL sprain, per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Mercer is expect to miss the next six weeks after a collision at second base in Sunday's game. To replace him, the team recalled corner infielder Brent Morel from Triple-A Indianapolis. He was hitting .266 with nine home runs and 47 RBI at Indianapolis. To make room on the 40-man roster, the team moved outfielder Corey Hart from the 15-day to 60-day disabled list. Hart was recently shut down while on a minor league rehab assignment, recovering from a shoulder injury.
The Pirates announced Friday they cut 12 players from major-league camp. They optioned Bobby LaFromboise to Triple-A, while reassigning Deolis Guerra, Gorkys Hernandez, Charlie Leesman, Brad Lincoln, Steve Lombardozzi, Brent Morel, Gustavo Nunez , Deibinson Romero, Jose Tabata, Sebastian Valle and Josh Wall to minor-league camp.
Brent Morel returned to game action for the Pirates on Sunday, entering the game as a defensive replacement at third base in the sixth inning. Morel had been sidelined since March 8 with a strained hamstring.
