The Angels reassigned seven players to minor league camp on Sunday, led by first-round draft pick Sean Newcomb . Newcomb had a 10.80 ERA this spring. "His talent is real," manager Mike Scioscia said. "He has a chance to be special." The Angels also reassigned RHP Trevor Gott (3.86 spring ERA), LHP Atahualpa Severino (no spring appearances), LHP Nate Smith (18.00 ERA in one inning), C Stephen McGee (no plate appearances in one game), C Jackson Williams (0-for-2), SS Eric Stamets (3-for-3 with a triple and stolen base).
Angels pitcher Atahualpa Severino and catcher Carlos Perez did not report to camp due to visa issues, according to MLB.com. Both players joined the team during the offseason, and will compete for spots during camp. It's unclear how soon either player will be able to report.
The Braves have invited 22 non-roster players to participate in major-league spring training, highlighted by pitcher Jason Hursh and infielder Tommy La Stella, MLB.com reports. The Braves' other invitees include pitchers Lay Batista, J.R. Graham, Mark Lamm, Cody Martin, Yunesky Maya, Daniel Rodriguez, Gus Schlosser, Atahualpa Severino, Shae Simmons and Ian Thomas; catchers Matt Kennelly, Steven Lerud, Braeden Schlehuber and Jose Yepez; outfielder Matt Lipka; and infielders Mat Gamel, Phil Gosselin, Tyler Greene, Mark Hamilton and Edward Salcedo. The Braves' first-round pick in the 2013 amateur draft, Hursh allowed two earned runs in 27 innings while striking out 15 and walking 10 at Class A Rome in his first season with the organization. La Stella, who could compete for a starting role at second base, hit .343/.422/.473 with four home runs, 41 RBI and seven stolen bases in 283 at-bats with Double-A Mississippi last season.
The Pirates have acquired minor-league pitcher Atahualpa Severino from the Royals for cash, the Kansas City Star reports Friday. Severino had a 3.00 ERA with 10 strikeouts against six walks over nine innings at Triple-A. He'll give the Pirates some minor-league depth -- perhaps a necessity, as the club has put a great deal of mileage on their bullpen this year.
The Royals announced Wednesday that LHP Atahualpa Severino has been re-assigned to minor-league camp. Severino made five spring appearances for the Royals, allowing two earned runs in four innings while striking out two batters. He spent all of 2012 with Washington's Triple-A affiliate, posting a 2.81 ERA in 48 innings, but he walked 36 batters.
