One-time premier pitching prospect Justin Miller is among five players dispatched to the minors by the Tigers on Friday. He is headed to Triple-A Toledo along with first baseman Jordan Lennerton and center fielder Daniel Fields. Third baseman Francisco Martinez has been assigned to Double-A Erie while second baseman Devon Travis was sent to minor league camp. Miller was 9-1 with a 1.83 ERA with 77 strikeouts in 69 innings at the Double-A level in 2011 before Tommy John surgery halted his progress.
The Tigers have acquired outfielder Francisco Martinez from the Mariners in exchange for cash or a player to be named later, the Detroit Free Press reports. Martinez was initially drafted by Detroit and was traded to Seattle in the Doug Fister trade. Martinez has a brutal .496 OPS in 126 at-bats at Triple-A Tacoma this year.
The Mariners designated outfielder Francisco Martinez for assignment Monday, MLB.com reports. That makes room on the 40-man roster for Nick Franklin. Martinez, who was playing with Triple-A Tacoma, was acquired in the trade with the Tigers for Doug Fister.
Mariners made another round of roster cuts Friday. They optioned infielder Carlos Triunfel, lefty Bobby LaFromboise, righty Yoervis Medina and infielder Vinnie Catricala to Triple-A Tacoma. They also optioned outfielder Julio Morban and infielder Francisco Martinez to Double-A West Tennessee while righty Andrew Carraway was reassigned to minor-league camp.
Seattle traded starter Doug Fister to the Tigers, reports SI.com on Saturday. The Tigers also get David Pauley and the Mariners receive Charlie Furbush, Casper Wells and 3B prospect Francisco Martinez.
