The White Sox reassigned seven players to minor-league camp Wednesday, including infielder Mike McDade, outfielder Denis Phipps, catcher Kevan Smith and pitchers Chris Bassitt, Parker Frazier, Brian Omogrosso and Mauricio Robles. The White Sox have 55 players remaining in major-league camp after the moves.
Baseball America reports that the White Sox signed reliever Jairo Asencio and outfielder Denis Phipps to minor league contracts. Asencio comes from the Orioles' organization, and he recorded 28 saves with a 2.66 ERA for Triple-A Norfolk. Phipps played for the Reds' Triple-A affiliate at Louisville and batted .248 with nine home runs, 49 RBI and 14 stolen bases.
The Reds made several moves to finalize their roster for the regular season, reassigning second baseman Emmanuel Burriss, catcher Corky Miller and outfielders Denis Phipps and Derrick Robinson to their minor-league camp. Cincinnati also outrighted pitcher Jose Arredondo to Triple-A Louisville while optioning pitcher Logan Ondrusek to Double-A Pensacola. Third baseman Jason Donald also was designated for assignment and the Reds purchased the contract of shortstop Cesar Izturis to take his place on the 40-man roster.
The Reds recalled reliever Logan Ondrusek from Triple-A Louisville as rosters expanded Saturday. Cincinnati also recalled Didi Gregorius, Denis Phipps and Henry Rodriguez in their first round of September callups. Devin Mesoraco will be activated Sunday, with Pedro Villarreal and Todd Redmond expected to be promoted Tuesday.
