Garcia signed a minor league contract with the Brewers on Friday. Garcia split time between Double-A and Triple-A in 2015, struggling to just a .245/.260/.265 after the promotion. He'll likely serve as catching depth with the Brewers, but the 25-year-old could see his first stint in the majors at some point during 2016.
The Phillies have optioned catcher Rene Garcia and infielders Russ Canzler and Cord Phelps to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Garcia hit .158 with one double in 19 plate appearances this spring. Canzler hit .267 with two doubles and four RBI in 45 plate appearances in spring training while Phelps hit .311 with one home run and six RBI in 45 at-bats.

He hit .320/.405/.467 with nine home runs, 86 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 450 at-bats with Class A Quad Cities last season. Appel, 22, was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 amateur draft. He went 3-1 with a 3.79 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 33:9 K:BB ratio in 38 innings over 10 starts between low Class A Tri-City and Class A Quad Cities.
