Player Outlook
Coming off an uncharacteristic 16-homer, 62-RBI campaign in 2022, J.D. Martinez inked a one-year, $10 million pact with the Dodgers last season and clubbed 33 home runs and tallied 103 RBI despite playing in 26 fewer games. A .301 ISO was his best since 2017 and a 54.8 percent hard-hit rate was the highest of his career, though he also had a career-worst 31.4 percent strikeout rate. It's the first time his strikeout rate has even come close to 30 percent, so it may be nothing to worry about since he also made consistent hard contact. A reproduction of the elite counting stats in 2024 would be optimistic in Martinez's age-36 season, but he should again be a heavily productive bat that's only really limited by his DH-only status.

  • Mets' J.D. Martinez: Optioned in advance of Opening Day

The Mets optioned Martinez to Triple-A Syracuse on Monday. Since Martinez didn't sign with the Mets until last week, he didn't have sufficient time to complete his hitting progression in spring training, so he'll be left off the 26-man active roster ahead of Friday's season opener versus the Brewers. The Mets haven't indicated if Martinez will immediately report to Syracuse for the start of its season Friday, or if he'll continue to see live at-bats at the Mets' spring training facility in Florida. Either way, Martinez will join the Mets and serve as their everyday designated hitter once he spends around 10 days in the minors compiling at-bats, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

  • Mets' J.D. Martinez: Won't open season with Mets

Martinez will spend at least 10 days preparing to join the Mets after the season begins, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. It's unclear whether Martinez's preparation will occur in Triple-A games or at the Mets' spring training facility, but he won't be available to serve as New York's DH until after the second weekend of the season. Manager Carlos Mendoza said Saturday that once Martinez is ready to make his Mets debut, he will bat fourth in the lineup behind Pete Alonso, per Tim Healey of Newsday.

  • Mets' J.D. Martinez: Could consent to being optioned

Martinez could consent to being optioned to Triple-A Syracuse until the Mets decide he's ready to take over as their everyday designated hitter, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. While Martinez has options remaining, because he has accrued so much service time he would have to consent to being sent down to the minors. It sounds like he would be willing to do that in an effort to get up to speed after missing most (if not all) of spring training. Mark Vientos -- who appears out of a job once Martinez is ready -- could be used as the Mets' DH initially.

  • Mets' J.D. Martinez: Joins Mets on one-year deal

Martinez signed a one-year deal worth $12 million with the Mets on Thursday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. The Mets have reportedly been in talks with Martinez for much of spring training, and he'll now join the team on a short-term deal. He should serve as the team's primary designated hitter, cutting into the playing time of Mark Vientos and potentially Brett Baty. Martinez is entering his age-36 season, but he has maintained a wRC+ of at least 119 in each of the last three campaigns and adds another quality bat to the middle of the Mets' lineup.

  • J.D. Martinez: Talking to Mets

The Mets are among the teams discussing a contract with Martinez, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Signing Martinez would result in a 110 percent luxury tax penalty for the Mets, but owner Steve Cohen has "given the go-ahead to seriously discuss" signing the designated hitter, per Heyman. Heyman also says the interest is mutual, although the Angels and Marlins appear to still be in the running for Martinez, too. Mark Vientos is currently projected to be the Mets' DH.

  • J.D. Martinez: No fit in San Francisco

Martinez was being pursued by the Giants before the club signed Jorge Soler in mid-February, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. The Giants offered a one-year, $14 million contract, per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, but Martinez is apparently looking for closer to $20 million. The 36-year-old slugger's 33 homers with the Dodgers last season was the first time he topped 30 since 2019, but his .271/.321/.572 slash line was also accompanied by a career-worst 31.2 percent strikeout rate.

Martinez went 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in Friday's 8-5 win over the Nationals. It's his first long ball since July 25 and 26th of the season, and the 36-year-old DH might have enough time left on the calendar to reach 30 homers for the first time since 2019.
