    Player Outlook

When the Yankees acquired Nathan Eovaldi from the Marlins, they were hoping he could channel his upper 90s heat into a greater level of dominance. Two months into the season, he was putting up typically nondescript stats, and then he started to throw his splitter more. By July, it was paying dividends, as Eovaldi was seeing spikes in his strikeout and ground ball rates. He was shut down in early September with elbow inflammation, but he will be ready for spring training. It may be hard to trust the relatively new version of Eovaldi, but drafting him among the top 50 starting pitchers would not be a reach.

    Player News
    • Eovaldi agreed to a one-year, $5.6 million deal with the Yankees on Tuesday, avoiding arbitration, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. The hard-throwing righty is coming off the best season of his career, going 14-3 in 27 starts. His ERA was somewhat underwhelming at 4.20, but his FIP of 3.42 suggests that he ran into some tough luck over the course of the season. He'll rejoin the Yankees on a one-year deal and figures to be a back of the rotation starter yet again.

    • Eovaldi (elbow) would have been on the ALDS roster had the Yankees advanced, The NY Post reports. After missing most of the final month of the season with elbow inflammation, it appears as though Eovaldi had made enough progress to pitch in meaningful situations, but just ran out of time. It's still encouraging news that he should be able to undergo a normal offseason and rejoin the rotation by the time spring training starts.

    • Yankeesstarter Nathan Eovaldi (elbow) threw a simulated game Monday, Joe Lemire of USA Today reports. Eovaldi has now been able to throw regularly for over a week and appears to be a candidate to rejoin the team should they advance to the American League Division Series. While he's likely not stretched out enough to return to the rotation, he should be at least available out of the bullpen.

    • Yankees veteran left-hander CC Sabathia will miss the postseason after deciding to check himself into alcohol rehab, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet reports. There's a question as to whether he would have made the postseason roster anyway, but now that has been solved. With him out, it seems likely the Yankees would return Nathan Eovaldi for the American League Division Series if he's healthy. Otherwise they may decide to go with a three-man rotation if they get past Houston.

    • Yankees pitcher Nathan Eovaldi (elbow) played catch Monday, Sweeny Murti of Sportsradio 66 WFAN reports. It's the third time in four days that Eovaldi was able to play catch, clearly an encouraging sign after suffering from elbow inflammation. Per manager Joe Girardi, Eovaldi won't be on the roster should the Yankees be in the Wild Card game, but could be a candidate to join the bullpen if the team continues to advance.
