The Marlins have optioned pitcher Jose Urena to Triple-A New Orleans and pitcher Kendry Flores to Double-A Jacksonville, the team announced Sunday. Urena allowed three hits and one walk in two scoreless innings this spring while striking out three. Flores didn't see action in a Grapefruit League game. The Marlins also re-assigned outfielders Austin Wates and Kenny Wilson, second baseman Avery Romero and pitchers Nick Wittgren and Trevor Williams to minor-league camp. The moves leave the team's spring roster at 53 players.
The Marlins acquired pitcher Jarred Cosart, infielder Enrique Hernandez and outfielder Austin Wates from the Astros prior to Thursday's trade deadline, in exchange for a package of prospects that includes third baseman Colin Moran, outfielder Jake Marisnick and pitcher Francis Martes. The deal came through just before the deadline, and likely includes a compensation pick going Houston's way, according to MLB.com.
The Houston Chronicle reports Astros OF prospect Austin Wates was placed on the 7-day DL at Class A Lancaster because of a strained hamstring. Wates is batting .308 with a .363 OBP, 62 runs, 15 doubles, six triples, five homers, 52 RBI and 16 stolen bases in 91 games.
