The Cubs sent pitcher Joe Ortiz outright to Triple-A Iowa Tuesday. Ortiz was designated for assignment Sunday after the team claimed Anthony Varvaro off waivers. He has given up four earned runs in 10 2/3 innings for Triple-A Iowa while striking out just one batter and walking five.
The Cubs have claimed pitcher Anthony Varvaro off waivers from the Red Sox and designated pitcher Joe Ortiz for assignment, the team announced Sunday. Varvaro made nine appearances with the Red Sox before hitting waivers, giving up five earned runs in 11 innings while striking out eight batters and walking six. He posted ERAs under 3.00 while making more than 60 appearances in each of his previous two seasons, both with the Braves, and he owns a career 3.23 ERA, 7.4 K/9 rate and 3.4 BB/9 rate in 183 2/3 innings across 166 appearances. Ortiz, whose only major-league action came in 2013 with the Rangers, has given up four earned runs in 10 2/3 innings for Triple-A Iowa while striking out just one batter and walking five. He'll likely be reassigned to Iowa if he clears waivers.
The Cubs announced Thursday they cut 12 players from major-league camp, including top catcher prospect Kyle Schwarber,who was reassigned to minor-league camp. The other players reassigned to minor-league camp were pitchers Daniel Bard, Anthony Carter, Jorge De Leon, Gonzalez Germen and Francisley Bueno, infielder Chris Valaika, outfielders Albert Almora, Mike Baxter and Adron Chambers. Pitcher Blake Parker and pitcher Joseph Ortiz were optioned to Triple-A Iowa.
The Cubs have claimed reliever Joe Ortiz off waivers from the Rangers. Ortiz was limited to 15 appearances because of fractured foot. The left-hander posted a 4.00 ERA over 18 innings of work.
Rangers reliever Joe Ortiz has moved his rehab to Triple-A Round Rock after throwing a scoreless inning in Arizona League play. Ortiz has been out since fracturing his foot in an offseason motorcycle accident. He could join the team's bullpen sometime in August.
