Castillo was released by the Indians on Saturday. A 27-year-old righty out of the Dominican Republic, Castillo has languished at Double-A this year, posting a 5.68 ERA and 1.54 WHIP over 50.2 innings. He'll probably struggle to catch on elsewhere this season, as the minor league season ends in roughly three weeks. However, he could receive a minor league deal from another club next spring.
Castillo pitched a perfect ninth inning, striking out a batter in Double-A Erie's 7-0 win over Trenton on Thursday. Castillo pitched well this spring, accruing a 3.48 ERA and 1.35 WHIP over 10.1 innings. Despite his productive spring training, the 27-year-old will likely remain at Double-A Erie this year given the fact that his only appearance in the majors was in 2012 and during that time he gave up 14 earned runs over 16 innings.
The Cubs announced Tuesday reliever Lendy Castillo cleared waivers and will report to Triple-A Iowa.
The Cubs designated reliever Lendy Castillo for assignment on Saturday. The team finally made the signing of Carlos Villanueva official and this was the corresponding roster move.
