Bawcom signed a minor league contract with the Padres on Friday, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports. Now 28, Bawcom is coming off his finest professional season. The right-hander managed a 1.92 ERA and 1.15 WHIP over 89 innings for Triple-A Oklahoma City -- in the very tough pitching environments of the Pacific Coast League. There was nothing in the report about a spring training invite, so Bawcom figures to open 2017 in the minors, but there would seem to be a path for Bawcom given the lack of talent in the Padres' rotation.
The Mariners have dispatched right-handed reliever Logan Bawcom to Triple-A Tacoma after designated him for assignment last week. The 26 year old pitched in 40 games at Tacoma last season.
The Mariners have designated for assignment right-hander Logan Bawcom. Bawcom has yet to pitch in a major league game. His production slipped at the Triple-A level last season as he compiled a career-worst 4.72 ERA.
The Mariners cut 11 players from major-league camp Tuesday, leaving them with 44 players left on the camp roster, MLB.com reports. Five players were optioned to Triple-A Tacoma, including infielders Carlos Triunfel and Ji-Man Choi, catcher Jesus Sucre and pitchers Bobby LaFromboise and Logan Bawcom. Six players were re-assigned to minor-league camp, including infielders Ty Kelly and Nate Tenbrik, catcher Mike Dowd and pitchers Logan Kensing, Matt Palmer and Nick Hill. "They're all tough," manager Lloyd McClendon told MLB.com Tuesday. "Any time you've got to tell a young man that his dream is not going to come to fruition at this particular time, that's tough. They all work hard, they give us all they've got. I was very pleased. Like I told all of them, it wasn't performance based. The numbers are such that we have to start moving guys out, but their performances will not be forgotten, and at some point, they'll be back."
The Mariners added first baseman Ji-Man Choi, pitcher Logan Bawcom and outfielders Stefen Romero and James Jones to the team's 40-man roster Wednesday. Choi hit .295/.394/.535 with 18 home runs and 85 RBI in 424 at-bats across three levels last season. Romero hit .277/.331/.448 with 11 home runs and 74 RBI in 375 at-bats with Triple-A Tacoma. Jones hit .275/.347/.419 with six home runs, 46 RBI and 28 stolen bases in 363 at-bats with Double-A Jackson. Bawcom went 1-4 with a 2.91 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 64:24 K:BB ratio in 65 innings over 51 appearances with Triple-A Tacoma.
