The Yankees optioned Gamel to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday. Gamel started games Tuesday and Wednesday but went just 1-for-8 in five games with the Yankees, so the team decided to send him down to open up a spot on the roster for reliever Tyler Olson. Gamel will likely garner consideration next time the Yankees need to call up an outfielder from the minors.
Gamel was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre prior to Thursday's game. With Alex Rodriguez heading to the DL, and Carlos Beltran subsequently sliding over to serve as the primary DH, Gamel was recalled to offer outfield depth. He has useful speed, and is skilled at making contact, so he should see at least a handful of at-bats while Rodriguez is out. Brett Gardner (arm) is out of the lineup Tuesday, with Dustin Ackley and Aaron Hicks serving as the outfielders next to Jacoby Ellsbury, but Gamel should soon find his way into the lineup.
Gamel went 0-for-3 with a run and two walks against Syracuse on Friday. Gamel is batting .268/.344/.339 in 39 at-bats this season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The 23-year-old has yet to hit a home run and only has one RBI during 14 games this year after hitting 10 home runs and 64 RBI a year ago. The left-fielder could have a shot at seeing time with the Yankees at some point this season, but with Aaron Judge and Nick Swisher also on-deck for call-ups, he may have to wait a little bit longer for his major league debut.
Gamel was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday. After struggling at Double-A throughout 2014, Gamel more than held his own at the Triple-A level last season, posting an .830 OPS with double-digit homers and steals. He's still not much of a prospect, but the 23-year-old is on the 40-man roster and could get his first cup of coffee in the majors in 2016.
Gamel was signed to a major league contract Friday. Gamel posted impressive numbers with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2015, slashing .300/.358/.472 with 10 homers and 13 steals. The big league club's outfield depth appears to be accounted for already, but Gamel will now be protected from the Rule 5 draft.
