Contreras cleared waivers Wednesday and has been released by the Reds, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Just two days after being optioned Monday in the Reds' first round of spring training cuts, the organization decided to cut bait and release Contreras. The 25-year-old right hander has been saddled with command issues as illustrated by his astronomical walk rate numbers in 2015 (6.8 BB/9 at Triple-A Louisville, 6.4 BB/9 with Cincinnati). He is now a free agent and could find a spot in another organization's camp as a depth option.
Contreras was among the first 11 cuts by the Reds, getting optioned to Triple-A Louisville. Contreras's control fell apart last season, with an added bonus of losing velocity. He's still on the 40-man roster and thus could get a call when the Reds make their first bullpen changes, but he's also on the short list of getting designated for assignment for one of their prospects.
The Reds recalled pitcher Jumbo Diaz from Triple-A on Friday, the team announced. Diaz produced a 6.65 ERA over 23 innings of work earlier this season. To make room for Diaz, the team optioned pitcher Carlos Contreras to Triple-A. Contreras has a 6.08 ERA over 13 1/3 innings of work this season.
The Reds have recalled pitchers Carlos Contreras and Donovan Hand from Triple-A Louisville, and optioned outfielder Brennan Boesch to Triple-A, the team announced on Tuesday. Contreras appeared in three games with the Reds earlier this season, allowing one earned run in 3 1/3 innings. With Triple-A, he owns a 4.66 ERA in 19 1/3 innings. Hand hasn't thrown a big-league pitch since 2013. He has been pitching in Triple-A after signing a minor-league deal with the Reds in January. In 15 games, he owns a 4.50 ERA over 44 innings pitched. Boesch has struggled this season in a part-time role with the Reds. In 56 at-bats, he's batting just .125 with one extra-base hit.
The Reds have officially recalled pitcher Raisel Iglesias from Triple-A and optioned pitcher Carlos Contreras to Louisville, the team announced. Iglesias is scheduled to start on Wednesday against the Braves with Cincinnati in need of a spot starter. He is 1-2 with a 3.80 ERA in four starts with Louisville this season. Contreras has a 2.70 ERA with three strikeouts in three appearances this season.
