  • Athletics' T.J. McFarland: Acquired by Oakland

The Athletics acquired McFarland from the Dodgers on Tuesday in exchange for cash considerations and selected his contract from Triple-A Las Vegas. It's quite the team downgrade for McFarland, but he'll likely take it since he gets to join a major-league roster. The veteran reliever made just three appearances at the big-league level in 2023, allowing one earned run over 1.2 innings with the Mets.

  • Dodgers' T.J. McFarland: Receives NRI from Dodgers

McFarland signed a minor-league contract with the Dodgers on Friday that includes an invitation to spring training, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. McFarland, 34, spent the bulk of last season in the minors but did get into three games with the Mets. The veteran left-hander will compete for a spot in the Dodgers' Opening Day bullpen but will probably begin the year at Triple-A Oklahoma City.

McFarland signed a minor-league contract with the Orioles on Saturday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. The veteran lefty spent the first four years of his big-league career (2013-16) in Baltimore, recording a 4.27 ERA and 1.55 WHIP. • Mets' T.J. McFarland: Outrighted to Triple-A

McFarland cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Syracuse on Monday. McFarland is no longer on the Mets' 40-man roster but it appears he will remain in the organization. The veteran left-hander has posted a 5.40 ERA over three relief appearances at the big-league level in 2023.

  • Mets' T.J. McFarland: Designated for assignment

The Mets designated McFarland for assignment Friday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. With Jose Quintana returning from the 60-day injured list, McFarland will be cut loose to free up a spot on the 40-man roster. The 34-year-old lefty pitched just 1.2 innings during his time in New York, allowing one run and striking out two batters. He's been solid in Triple-A, so it's possible another team will claim McFarland off waivers.

The Mets selected McFarland's contract from Triple-A Syracuse on Monday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. • Mets' T.J. McFarland: Sent to minor-league camp

The Mets reassigned McFarland to minor-league camp Sunday. The veteran left-hander signed with New York as a non-roster invitee in January but struggled during spring training with six runs allowed over eight innings. • Mets' T.J. McFarland: Lands deal with Mets

McFarland signed a minor-league contract with the Mets on Tuesday, Michael Mayer of MetsmerizedOnline.com reports. It's unclear whether McFarland has been given an invitation to big-league camp, but it would stand to reason that he probably has. The left-hander stumbled with the Cardinals in 2022, posting an ugly 6.61 ERA across 28 appearances.

  • Cardinals' T.J. McFarland: Re-ups with Cards

McFarland re-signed Tuesday with the Cardinals on a minor-league contract. McFarland and the Cardinals parted ways Aug. 15 when he was booted off the 40-man roster, but after assessing his options in free agency, the veteran southpaw chose to stick around in the organization. He'll report to Triple-A Memphis and could get a late-season call-up if the Cardinals have a need for a lefty reliever down the stretch.

  • Cardinals' T.J. McFarland: Loses 40-man spot

The Cardinals designated McFarland for assignment Wednesday. Given that the left-handed McFarland has yielded a .354 average and .542 slugging percentage to opposing left-handed hitters this season, the Cardinals' decision to cut bait with him isn't an overly surprising one. St. Louis summoned Jake Woodford from Triple-A Memphis to replace him in the bullpen.

  • Cardinals' T.J. McFarland: Reinstated from IL

McFarland (illness) was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list Monday. McFarland landed in the league's health and safety protocols in late June but will rejoin the Cardinals' bullpen after spending just under three weeks away from the team. • Cardinals' T.J. McFarland: Begins rehab assignment

McFarland (illness) begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. McFarland struck out one in a perfect inning during Wednesday's outing, and he'll make his second rehab appearance Friday. Assuming the southpaw feels good following Friday's appearance, it seems likely that he'll be back in action in the coming days.

  • Cardinals' T.J. McFarland: Bullpen session set for Wednesday

McFarland (illness) is expected to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, John Denton of MLB.com reports. McFarland has been out since June 22, though he cleared the COVID-19 protocols a week later. The southpaw is likely to need a rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis after his bullpen session, so it's unlikely he's activated until the weekend.

  • Cardinals' T.J. McFarland: Still recovering from COVID-19

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said McFarland (illness) has yet to clear all COVID-19-related protocols and thus hasn't resumed working out, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. Marmol noted that McFarland is feeling better since landing on the COVID-19-related injured list Wednesday, so he could be cleared to begin ramping up within the next few days. The lefty reliever posted a 7.43 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 16:8 K:BB across 26.2 innings this season prior to landing on the IL.

  • Cardinals' T.J. McFarland: Placed on injured list

McFarland was placed on the injured list without a designation Wednesday. Since the Cardinals didn't provide a reason for placing McFarland on the injured list, he's likely on the COVID-19 IL. Assuming that's the case, the southpaw will be eligible to rejoin the team as soon as he clears the league's health and safety protocols. His return timetable depends on whether he's tested positive for COVID-19, but right-hander Junior Fernandez was recalled to take his place in the bullpen.

  • Cardinals' T.J. McFarland: Nabs four outs Monday

McFarland struck out one without allowing a baserunner in 1.1 innings during Monday's 7-5 win over the Pirates. McFarland appeared to be set for mop-up work when he entered the game in the sixth inning with the Cardinals down 5-0, but they tied it up in their half of the frame. He got one more out before turning the ball over to Giovanny Gallegos. McFarland has had few bright spots lately, giving up 15 runs and 24 hits across his last 14 innings, but he was effective Monday in his second straight scoreless appearance. The southpaw has a 7.40 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and 15:8 K:BB across 24.1 innings as a low-leverage option this season.

McFarland allowed two hits and struck out one in 1.2 innings during Sunday's 8-0 loss to the Brewers. He's posted a 7.23 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 12:6 K:BB across 18.2 innings in 17 outings overall. Given his inconsistent pitching, the southpaw is likely to be limited to low-leverage assignments.

McFarland allowed five runs on four hits and a walk in one inning during Wednesday's 11-4 loss to the Mets. He wasn't very effective, allowing the Mets to rally for five runs, capped off by a three-run blast from Pete Alonso before finishing off the frame. McFarland has allowed 10 runs in 7.1 innings in May, and his good start to the year is but a memory now. He owns a 9.00 ERA, 1.85 WHIP, 7:5 K:BB and one hold through 13 innings.

  • Cardinals' T.J. McFarland: Spotless to begin season

McFarland pitched two perfect innings and struck out one in Sunday's 4-1 loss to the Reds. McFarland entered in a jam in the sixth inning, but he induced a double play to get out of danger without allowing inherited runners from Adam Wainwright to score. McFarland then made quick work in the seventh. This was his first clean outing of the year -- he's allowed five hits and two walks with three strikeouts across five scoreless innings to begin the season. The southpaw figures to stay in a multi-inning role, though he's picked up a hold in four appearances.
