Stites was outrighted to Triple-A Reno on Thursday. The Diamondbacks designated States for assignment on Jan. 13, and after he cleared waivers, he was outrighted to Triple-A. Stites has yet to impress at the major league level, posting ERA's of 5.73 and 12.46 over the last two season respectively. In all likelihood, he'll begin the year at Triple-A Reno working out of the bullpen.
The Diamondbacks designated Stites for assignment Wednesday. After acquiring right-handed pitcher Cody Hall from the Giants, the D-Backs needed to open a spot on the 40-man roster, and ultimately Stites was the fall guy. While he'll likely begin spring training with minor leaguers, Stites has 48 major league appearances under his belt, posting a 7.13 ERA, 1.632 WHIP, and 32:21 K:BB in 41.2 innings.
Diamondbacks reliever Matt Stites was crushed in an outing against the Astros on Friday, allowing seven runs (five earned) on four hits and two walks, while recording just two outs. The game was already pretty well out of hand, but Stites just didn't have it in this one. This one outing jumped his ERA on the year five runs to 12.46, which tells you about the kind of year he was having even before this stinker. While still just 25 years old, it's not clear how many more chances Stites will have to make in the majors.
The Diamondbacks announced the recall of a trio of players on Tuesday. Right-handers Enrique Burgos and Matt Stites , as well as infielder Brandon Drury have all been summoned from Triple-A Reno. Burgos and Stites have both seen time with the D-Backs this season. Drury, however, has yet to get a taste of the big leagues. The 21-year-old was a 13th-round draft pick by the Braves back in 2010. He is making his Major League debut on Tuesday, as he is the starting third baseman for Game 1 of the doubleheader against the Rockies.
The Diamondbacks promoted pitcher Zack Godley from Double-A on Thursday, the team announced. Godley will start Thursday's game against the Brewers. To make room for Godley, the team optioned pitcher Matt Stites to Triple-A. Stites had a 4.50 ERA over two innings of work this season.
