Mazzoni was designated for assignment by the Padres on Tuesday. The right-hander failed to make the roster out of camp after battling a shoulder injury late last season. He made two appearances with Triple-A El Paso to begin the year, but has not pitched in a game since April 13. It's uncertain if there's something wrong with Mazzoni, physically, but he figures to pass through waivers unclaimed regardless.
Mazzoni was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Monday, Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Mazzoni was competing for a bullpen spot with the Padres, but after allowing a .357 BAA and giving up four runs (three earned) in 4.1 innings pitched, he'll head back to Triple-A to develop a bit more. There is a good chance that he could reappear with the Padres at some point this season if he can improve against upper-level hitters, though, as he did reach the majors for a brief time last season.
The Padres recalled relief pitcher Cory Mazzoni from Triple-A and placed him on the 60-day disabled list on Friday, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune. Mazzoni will head to the disabled list because of a shoulder strain.
The Padres called up third baseman Brett Wallace on Friday. Wallace was hitting .305 with eight home runs and 37 RBI at Triple-A El Paso. He last played in the Major Leagues in 2013, with Houston. To make room for Wallace on the roster, the Padres optioned pitcher Cory Mazzoni to El Paso. Mazzoni had a 20.77 ERA in eight games with the Padres. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the Padres designated pitcher Eury De La Rosa for assignment. De La Rosa has played for three organizations this season. He was 0-1, 5.00 at El Paso.
The Padres announced that they have recalled right-handed pitcher Cory Mazzoni from Triple-A El Paso on Monday. This will be Mazzoni's third stint in the majors this year. His previous two were from April 26-May 1 and from May 19-June 2. Mazzoni has appeared in seven big-league innings and has a 10.29 ERA. With El Paso, Mazzoni had a 1.99 ERA in 17 appearances. Mazzoni was recalled because the Padres placed Wil Myers on the disabled list with his lingering wrist injury.
