Cone was given his release from Double-A Frisco on Monday. Cone was hitting just .208 in 36 games and was a huge disappointment after being selected 37th overall in the 2011 draft, four picks ahead of Red Sox outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr.
The Texas Rangers have suffered season-ending injuries to two top draft picks from the 2011 draft, MLB.com reports Saturday. Pitcher Kevin Matthews and outfielder Zach Cone are lost for the season. Matthews needs surgery due to a bone spur in his left shoulder. Cone is out with a torn left Achilles tendon. Matthews was the 33rd overall pick in the 2011 drafft and Cone was the 37th overall pick.
