    Player Outlook

Joe Mauer will likely never be the same player he was before suffering a concussion in 2013 as he's become a mediocre hitting first baseman, but at least there were some signs last year his career won't continue to decline. His command of the strike zone has always been his main strength, so it was encouraging to see an end to the precipitous three-year decline in his walk rate (13.7 percent last year). Despite having the worst batting average of his career at .261, Mauer was 11th in the AL in OBP. It was also encouraging to see him hit more than 10 home runs for a second consecutive season as a sharp decline in slugging also followed his concussion. Despite the improvements, Mauer remains a weak fantasy option at first base given his lack of power and declining averages. Entering the final two seasons of his $23 million per year contract, the Twins may feel less obligated to give him everyday duty, especially since he wore down again due to injuries (leg issues) and had a .499 OPS over his last 22 games.

    • Twins' Joe Mauer: Twins want to reduce workload
      By RotoWire Staff

Twins manager Paul Molitor would like to reduce Mauer's workload this season to keep him healthier. "I think I overplayed Joe the first half," Molitor told ESPN 1500 am Twin Cities. "I think it resulted in maybe leading to a potential injury as well as maybe the downslide of performance near the end of the season." Mauer started the season hot last year by hitting .323 with a .890 OPS in the first month. But he wore down later in the year and struggled with leg issues that led to a .499 OPS over his last 22 games. With a new GM and Mauer in the second to last year of his contract, it's possible he could have a much reduced role if he struggles early in the season.

      By RotoWire Staff

Mauer (quad) is in the lineup as the designated hitter Sunday against the Mariners, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. The veteran has been battling chronic soreness in his quads for several weeks, and Sunday will mark his first start in seven days. The expectation is that Mauer's playing time will likely continue to be limited over the final two series of the season.

    • Twins' Joe Mauer: Sitting again for nightcap
      By RotoWire Staff

Mauer is out of the lineup for Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader against the White Sox. James Beresford will step in for his second career start at first base (fourth overall) as Mauer sits again, as he did for Game 1. Mauer has really scuffling at the plate lately (.119/.245/.238 in September) and he's sitting more frequently as a result. Manager Paul Molitor said prior to Thursday's matinee that Mauer's swing has looked "laborious."

    • Twins' Joe Mauer: Laboring at plate
      By RotoWire Staff

Mauer, who is out of the lineup for Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader, has been laboring at the plate lately, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. "It looks laborious for him to swing right now so trying to make the right decisions on how much to play him and when," manager Paul Molitor said. Game 1 on Thursday will mark the fourth straight game that Mauer has been out of the lineup, and it sounds like he could be give a fair amount of days off down the stretch. Kennys Vargas continues to start at first base in his stead.

    • Twins' Joe Mauer: Out of Tuesday's lineup
      By RotoWire Staff

Mauer is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Tigers. This marks the second game in a row that Mauer has been held out in favor of Kennys Vargas. He has been a serviceable option in very deep leagues and OBP formats (.263/.364/.391), but his production is far below what most teams hope to get from first base or designated hitter.
